Round trip journey for my mice and new funds for the lab

Research in my lab focuses on understanding how the nervous system develops in mammals, how specific neurons get their final identity and integrate within defined neuronal networks. We use mice as a model system, and for several weeks I was very stressed because most of my mice have been contaminated with pinworms. We already lost 3,5 months in organisation/quarantine for moving them to my new Dept, and now, it will cost the lab 6 more months to retrieve the mouse strains. You can imagine we were very upset in the lab. And then, just when we needed it the most, the press secretary at KI informed me that I was one of the laureates for the Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2013. What a great news, another big 5-year research grant!

In this job, it is continuously up-and-down...
