The next five years and more

I expect the next five years to shape my future as a scientist. I have now the possibility to focus on the research I want to do, with total freedom and full responsibility. The choices I make will dictate what the lab will work on for a long time. As a consequence, a few decisions will affect what I think about, hope for and strive to achieve for a large part of my working career. I have already established the main research path, and now I can actually pursue my vision through the long-term support from Ragnar Söderbergs Stiftelse.

I anticipate that we over the coming five years will take advantage of the new experimental strategies and technological advancements we have established in the lab, and finalize our first characterization of circuits and network processes central in cognition. As part of the work we will demonstrate how different populations of neurons in the brain directly contribute to our cognitive behaviors.

For the future I want to expand the work, brain area by brain area, cell type by cell type, to fill in the blanks in our understanding of the physiological underpinnings of cognition. I have no doubt that our findings will aid in the development of better therapies for psychiatric disorders characterized by changed cognition such as schizophrenia, autism and ADHD.
